I launched "The Merrillville Youth Basketball Club" (MYBC) on March 2001 to stimulate "our" youth thru motivation, empowerment, compassion and discipline thru sports.
The students are taught to respect their communities as well as themselves as they become humanitarians. I believe in moving my students forward, especially through education.
The "Basketball Mentorship Program" has established a unique style. Fourteen years and 162 college students later, some of the best basketball players came out of Indiana, along with some of the best students. I am proud to say, presently, we have been bringing back our college graduates to our communities.
Our community becomes significant to our future students by having our graduates "giving back" through teaching, we also help raised money for cancer research for Southlake Methodist Hospital and other local organizations. Most importantly, we develop a fellowship within our society.
The program is always in high demand during Spring & Summer. My goal was to always follow up with our members throughout the year to ensure they stay on the right track (our program syllabus for success).
All participants of the "MYBC" become role models since they are required to "mentor" a younger person behind them.
"Success Breeds Success" - Nia Hamm, a motto we live by and practice to this very day.
